Quasi-static Test Methods

Classification in the mechanical test methods

In the quasi-static test methods, the stress is applied slowly, shock-free and steadily increasing until the test specimen used breaks.

The strain rates used are in the range of approx. 10-5 to 10-1 s-1, whereby the fracture of the test specimen or a defined limit of stress should be reached in an economically reasonable period of time. The material testing machines used in such tests must therefore guarantee a constant crosshead speed in the case of the preferred conventional test methods, irrespective of the load level and the test speed. Under these formal conditions, the quasi-static test methods, such as the tensile test or the bending test, are mainly used to determine material characteristic values or material characteristic functions, for quality assurance, damage analysis and preselection of plastics for defined applications as well as for solving simple design tasks (see: component testing).
