Prof. Dr. Sabine Seidler, born on 29 August 1961 in Sangerhausen, is a German-Austrian materials scientist whose research focuses on polymer testing, polymer diagnostics and technical fracture mechanics.

Sabine Seidler studied polymer materials engineering at the Technical University of Leuna-Merseburg (THLM) from 1979 to 1984. In 1989, she earned her doctorate with a thesis on

"Fracture mechanical evaluation of the toughness properties of particle-filled and short fibre-reinforced thermoplastics."

Until her habilitation, her scientific work at the Institute of Materials Science at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg focused on determining quantitative structure–property correlations based on micro- and fracture mechanical methods on thermoplastics and polymeric multiphase systems.

After a guest stay at the Ruhr University Bochum, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Institute for Experimental Mechanics], she was appointed full professor at the Vienna University of Technology for a professorship in ‘Non-metallic Materials’ while still in the habilitation phase.

She defended her habilitation thesis on the topic of

"Application of the crack resistance concept to determine structure-related fracture mechanical material parameters under impact loading"

at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in 1997, thereby acquiring the venia legendi in materials engineering.

Her research findings on structure-property correlations in polymeric multiphase systems have resulted in numerous articles in peer-reviewed international journals.

From 2001 to 2007, she was head of the Institute of Materials Science and Technology, in 2007 she was vice-rector of TU Wien, and from 2011 to 2023 she was the first female rector in the history of TU Wien.

In 2008, she became a member of the “Akademie Mitteldeutsche Kunststoffinnovationen” (Curriculum Vitae) and has been a member of the Presidium since 2019.

With her scientific work, she has made an active contribution to the development of polymer testing as an independent scientific discipline.

In 2018, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TU Dresden (Dr.-Ing. h. c.) and in 2024 she received an honorary doctorate from Brno University of Technology.

In 2014, she was awarded the H. F. Mark Medal for her outstanding contributions to Austrian polymer science, in particular her fundamental work in the field of structure-property correlations.

Based on her own work and in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Grellmann, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Chair of Materials Diagnostics/Materials Testing, she has authored numerous textbooks and specialist books in the fields of polymer testing, polymer diagnostics and fracture mechanics.
