Prof. Dr. Christian Bierögel (1953–2018), born on 18 January 1953 in Dresden, attended primary school in Dresden/Cursdorf and Dölzschen/Thuringia. After moving to Oberweißbach/Thuringia, he graduated from the local Gymnasium in 1971.

Christian Bierögel studied physics at the "Carl Schorlemmer" Technical University in Leuna-Merseburg from 1971 to 1973 and, after switching to the materials engineering course, he graduated with a degree in technical mechanics in 1978 with a thesis on the topic:

"Numerical evaluation of a theory for assessing the mechanical process sequence in disk granulators"

In the years 1978–1983, his first scientific work dealt with the vibration theory of technical systems and the recording of the damage mechanisms and kinetics of plastics for use in damage models of the FEM. In 1984, he received his doctorate with a thesis on the topic:

“On the problem of acoustic emission analysis on reinforced thermoplastics and thermosets”

After switching to the field of materials testing, he focused on research work based on the experience of his doctorate on the topic of recording the deformation and damage behaviour of plastics using NDT methods and the development of non-destructive and low-destructive testing methods for sensor monitoring of composite materials.

With his appointment as senior research assistant in 1989, he took on numerous tasks in academic self-support with the organization of research and teaching activities, organization of conferences and coordination and development of research projects. He was involved in the submission of many research projects in the field of polymer testing and diagnostics, and supervised more than 70 qualification theses and dissertations. With the establishment of the Professorship of Materials Testing/ Materials Diagnostics under the direction of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Wolfgang Grellmann at the Centre for Engineering Sciences at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, his work profile was expanded to include the field of technical fracture mechanics of plastics and composite materials. As part of his teaching activities, he held the following lectures at MLU Halle-Wittenberg:

  • Kunststoffprüfung
  • Zerstörungsfreie Werkstoffprüfung
  • Qualitätssicherung
  • Qualitätskontrolle und
  • Testing of Plastics.

A particular focus of his work was the establishment of the accredited testing laboratory “Mechanical Testing of Plastics (MPK)”, which was part of the Chair of Materials Diagnostics/ Materials Testing and also formed the core of the affiliated institute “Polymer Service GmbH Merseburg”, which was founded later.

In 2008, he became a member of the Akademie Mitteldeutsche Kunststoffinnovationen (AMK).

In 2013, Christian Bierögel was appointed Honorary Professor for “Materials Diagnostics –Materials Testing” at the Vienna University of Technology. Prof. Bierögel has thus received the teaching assignment to conduct courses at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration at the Vienna University of Technology in the field of “Materials Diagnostics – Materials Testing”.

With the appointment as honorary professor and the associated teaching assignment, the long-standing intensive cooperation in the field of research between the Professur Werkstoffprüfung/ Werkstoffdiagnostik Chair of Materials Testing / Materials Diagnostics at the Center for Engineering Sciences at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Head Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Wolfgang Grellmann) and the Chair of Non-Metallic Materials at the Institute of Materials Science and Technology at the Vienna University of Technology (Head O.Univ. Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Sabine Seidler) is extended to the field of teaching.

Based on his extraordinary expertise and in collaboration with Prof. Grellmann and Prof. Seidler, he has co-authored numerous articles in textbooks and reference books in the fields of polymer testing, polymer diagnostics and fracture mechanics.
