Reincke, Katrin
Prof. Dr Katrin Reincke, born on 25 May 1970 in Wippra/Saxony-Anhalt, attended school in Mansfeld and Hettstedt and graduated in 1988.
From 1989 to 1995, Katrin Reincke studied material science at the Technical University ‘Carl Schorlemmer’ Leuna-Merseburg and the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 1989 to 1995 and graduated in 1995 with a thesis on the topic:
‘Bruchmechanische Werkstoffoptimierung von modifizierten Polyamiden unter dynamischer Beanspruchung (Fracture mechanical material optimisation of modified polyamides under dynamic stress)’
From 1996 to 2001, her initial scientific work focused on the application behaviour of plastics in numerous applications in the medical and pharmaceutical fields and on the characterisation of human cartilage.
In the years that followed, her specialist work as a research assistant at the professorship Werkstoffdiagnostik/Werkstoffprüfung under the direction of Dr. rer. nat. habil. Wolfgang Grellmann at the Centre for Engineering Sciences at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, focusing on the elastomer materials group. After a guest stay at the Vienna University of Technology with Prof. Sabine Seidler, Chair of ‘Non-metallic Materials’, she completed her doctorate in 2005 with a thesis on the subject:
‘Bruchmechanische Bewertung von ungefüllten und gefüllten Elastomerwerkstoffen (Fracture mechanical evaluation of unfilled and filled elastomer materials’ ‘Bruchmechanische Bewertung von ungefüllten und gefüllten Elastomerwerkstoffen (Fracture mechanical evaluation of unfilled and filled elastomer materials)’
In addition to evaluating the influence of structural parameters on the fracture mechanical properties of elastomer materials, an important contribution from the point of view of testing methodology was to establish the instrumented tensile impact test as a test method for determining crack toughness as resistance to unstable crack initiation and propagation under impact-like loading.
Based on her experience with the applicability of common methods of technical fracture mechanics to determine crack toughness parameters under static and dynamic loading, she continued her research activities as part of a DFG Research Unit: ‘Fracture Mechanics and Statistical Mechanics of Reinforced Elastomer Blends’. As a result of the research funding in the years 2005 to 2012, a scientifically demanding, interdisciplinary collaboration of engineers and scientists from five locally distributed working groups was made possible. The cross-scale research concept led to a holistic approach to the topic and numerous scientific publications, in particular with Prof. Dr Gert Heinrich, IPF Dresden and Prof. Dr Manfred Klüppel, DIK Hannover.
Katrin Reincke was honoured for her scientific contributions with the Prof.-Hans-Henning-Kausch-Preis of the foundation Akademie Mitteldeutsche Kunststoffinnovation (AMK).
In 2016, he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the topic:
‘Elastomere Werkstoffe – Zusammenhang zwischen Mischungsrezeptur, Struktur und mechanischen Eigenschaften sowie dem Deformations- und Bruchverhalten (Elastomeric materials – Correlation between compound formulation, structure and mechanical properties as well as deformation and fracture behaviour)’ (ISBN 978-3-8440-4637-3) and thus acquired the venia legendi in the subject of materials science.
In the joint degree programme ‘Polymer Materials Science’ at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Merseburg University of Applied Sciences, she holds the lecture "Elastomer Materials" in the Polymer Engineering Focus module and supervises student qualification theses for the M. Sc. degree.
Katrin Reincke has continued her research work since 2012 as a research assistant and since 2016 as a business unit manager at Polymer Service GmbH Merseburg (PSM). She was appointed Managing Director of PSM in 2022 and took over as Chairman of the Management Board in 2024.
She has been a publicly appointed and sworn expert in the field of ‘Plastics Elastomers and films – Testing and damage analysis’ since 2014.
In 2019, Katrin Reincke was elected President of the ‘Akademie Mitteldeutsche Kunststoffinovationen (AMK)’.
Katrin Reincke was appointed Honorary Professor for ‘Materials Diagnostics – Materials Testing’ at TU Wien in 2020. Prof Reincke has thus received the teaching assignment to teach courses at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration at TU Wien in the field of ‘Materials Diagnostics – Materials Testing’. From 2013 to 2018, Prof. Dr. Christian Bierögel held this teaching assignment.
Based on her extraordinary expertise and her networking with other scientific institutions, she has authored and co-authored numerous articles in textbooks and specialist books.
