Sound emission
Definition
Sound emissions always occur in solids when certain material stresses are exceeded and elastic energy is released in the form of mechanical stress waves.
They can be caused by both microscopic and macroscopic processes. The emissions can be caused by various source mechanisms:
- Plastic deformations
- Crack formation, crack propagation, and fracture processes
- Friction processes in a crack
- Phase transformation processes
Frequency range for sound emission testing
In sound emission analysis, the occurrence of sound emissions is used to obtain in-depth information, e.g., on interface properties in fibre-reinforced plastics.
