Specimen shapes for fatigue tests

The application of methods for experimentally determining fatigue behaviour (see: fatigue) is not limited to the standardised test specimen shapes according to DIN 53442. In accordance with the standard, test specimen with the dimensions shown in Fig. 1a are used. The thickness h of the test specimen may be between 2 and 8 mm, with 4 mm thick test specimen being preferable. In addition to the standardised test specimen shapes, strip test specimens, various shapes of shoulder bars and compact test specimen can also be used (see Fig. 1b).
