Crack opening


Definition of crack opening

The determination at the location of the original crack tip has become the standard for defining the crack opening. For numerical calculations, the CTOD value is determined as the intersection of the crack edges with the straight line extending at an angle of 90° from the crack initiation point using the following relationship (see also Fig. 1):

The determination of δa is associated with experimental difficulties and is essentially only used for numerical problems.
