Biography

Georges Augustin Albert Charpy (1865–1945) was a French engineer who developed the impact test named after him (see: impact test according to Charpy).

In June 1901, he published his important work “Testing of Metals by Impact Bending of Notched Bars” in “Mémoires de la Société des Ingénieurs Civils de France” and in September 1901 at the “Congress of the International Association for Testing Materials” in Budapest. The work was based on a communication received by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1897 from a Mr. Russel, who was the first to use the pendulum impact technique to measure absorbed energy. George Charpy proposed using the notch impact test in addition to the tensile test to check the homogeneity of materials. Since then, this test has been one of the standard methods of mechanical materials testing. As a cost-effective, material-saving, and easy-to-perform test method, it is used in the materials manufacturing and processing industry for qualitative material comparison and for checking microstructural and treatment conditions within the framework of quality management. In addition, notch impact energy has found its way into material selection as well as regulations and standards for ensuring brittle fracture safety.

The 100th anniversary of the Charpy impact test was marked in 2001 with the Charpy Centenary Conference, held in Poitiers, France, from October 2 to 5, 2001, in honor of Georges Augustin Albert Charpy.
