Material parameter

Terminology

A material parameter (also parameter) is a quantitatively determinable property of a material. It can either be measured directly (physical measurand) or calculated from other measurands (derived parameter). In the technical literature, Blumenauer [1—3] in particular has pointed out a clear separation of the terms material value and material parameter, which has also been used in this WIKI-Lexicon „Polymer Testing and Diagnostic“.

Examples

Examples of material parameters are:

The magnitude value of a parameter is its characteristic value (see: material value), which is given as a product of numerical value and unit of measurement. Thus, especially in scientific literature, care must be taken to use the terms "material parameter" and "material value" according to their definitions.
