Glowing/hot-wire test
Classification of the glowing/hot-wire test
In polymer testing, the glowing/hot-wire test is one of the physical or technological test methods and can be specifically assigned to the methods for thermal testing of plastics, which also include, for example, the heat distortion resistance (HDT and VICAT), the melt mass-flow rate (MFR), the melt volume-flow rate (MVR), the shrinkage test and the thermal stress and thermal strain analysis (TSA and TDA).
Definition
The glowing/hot-wire test is a test of plastic sheets or components for flammability. The test specimen is exposed to a high temperature at certain points over a defined time interval.
Performance and material parameters
The DIN regulations for the glow wire test are part of the set of standards „Fire hazard testing“ (DIN EN IEC 60695) and are listed in parts 2-10, 2-11, 2-12 and 2-13. In simple versions, the test device is connected to two weights via cable pulls, which allow the contact pressure force, e.g. 1 N, to be set.
During this test, the time to ignition, the time to extinction, the glow-wire ignition temperature (GWIT) and the glow-wire flammability index (GWFI) are determined as material parameters that are used to evaluate the component. The glow-wire preheated to a certain temperature touches the test specimen (plate) for a period of 30 seconds.
