Prof. Dr. Goerg Hannes Michler, born on May 19, 1945, in Stefansruh/Isergebirge, is a German physicist and materials scientist specializing in polymer physics, morphology, micro- and nanomechanics of plastics, and electron microscopy, including atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Goerg Michler studied physics at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg from 1963 to 1968 and graduated from the Institute for Solid State Physics and Electron Microscopy in Halle (IFE) under Prof. Dr. Heinz Bethge with a thesis on

„Bestimmung der Verweilzeit durch Impulsbedampfung“ (“Determination of dwell time by pulse evaporation.”)

In January 1969, he began working in polymer research, initially at VEB Chemische Werke Buna, then at the Leuna-Merseburg Large-Scale Research Center (GFZ), and finally at the Leuna-Werke, which was interrupted by military service from 1970 to 1971. He worked at the IFE Halle under the direction of Prof. Dr. Heinz Bethge. His work focused on investigating the morphology of different polymers and their deformation and fracture behaviour, in particular using the then unique technique of in-situ deformation in a 1 MV high-voltage transmission electron microscope. The results were summarized in 1978 in a doctoral thesis at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg on the topic of

„Deformations- und Bruchmechanismen in glasartigen und kautschukmodifizierten Polymeren (“Deformation and fracture mechanisms in glassy and rubber-modified polymer”)

After transferring to the Scientific Research and Coordination Center (WKZ) of the chemical industry, he was able to expand his work at the IFE with a group focusing on polymer physics. In 1987, he defended his habilitation thesis on

Crazes und crazeartige Deformationen in Polymeren“ (“Crazes and craze-like deformations in polymers”)

at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He obtained his venia legendi in materials engineering at the Technische Hochschule Leuna-Merseburg (THLM). Scientific results from this academy–industry cooperation were published at conferences and in national and international journals.

After the political change, the conditions for this type of cooperation between research and industry no longer existed, so in 1990 he accepted a position as professor of „Experimental Physics“ at the Technische Hochschule Leuna-Merseburg and in 1992 a C4 professorship in “General Materials Science” at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg. The professorship was initially based at the Institute for Materials Science in Merseburg and, following internal restructuring, moved to the Institute for Physics on the Weinberg Campus in Halle (Saale).

In order to improve the transfer of knowledge from basic research to industrial practice, he and his colleagues founded the “Institut für Polymerwerkstoffe (IPW)” in 1992 as an affiliated institute at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, where he served as chairman of the board until 2010 and then as honorary chairman. In 2001, he co-founded Polymer Service GmbH Merseburg (PSM) as an affiliated institute at Martin-LutherUniversität Halle-Wittenberg, and in 2007, he co-founded the “Akademie Mitteldeutsche Kunststoffinnovationen” (AMK) in Merseburg as a foundation under public law.

In 2002, he was awarded the “A. v. Humboldt – J. C. Mutis Science Prize” by the Ministry of Science and Technology in Madrid, Spain, and in 2003, he received the “Paul J. Flory Polymer Research Prize” from North Texas University in Denton, USA.

He has published his scientific findings in over 450 presentations at events, in approximately 230 articles in journals, and in over 30 articles in books and monographs. He is the author, co-author, or editor of 19 monographs.

Since the end of 2010, he has been Professor Emeritus at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg.

In 2011, together with colleagues from Halle, he initiated the establishment of the “Heinz Bethge Foundation for Applied Electron Microscopy” as a foundation under public law based in Halle (Saale), of which he has been chairman of the board ever since.
