Prof. Dr. Volker Altstädt, born on December 5, 1954, in Kassel, is a German physicist and polymer materials engineer whose scientific work focuses on [[Plastics|plastics]] [[Material Science & Plastics|materials science]], plastics processing, [[Composite Materials Testing|composite materials testing]], plastics application technology, and technical [[Fracture Mechanics|fracture mechanics]].

Volker Altstädt studied physics at the [https://www.uni-kassel.de/uni/en/index.html Universität Kassel] from 1975 to 1982 and graduated with a degree in experimental physics in the field of semiconductor physics.

After transferring to the "Institut für Werkstofftechnik", he worked as a research assistant to [[Ehrenstein, Gottfried W.|Gottfried W. Ehrenstein]] from 1982 to 1987 in collaboration with Daimler Benz AG on the [[Composite Materials Testing|testing of composite materials]] and earned his doctorate with a dissertation on

Between 1987 and 1995, he worked in the research and development department at BASF AG in Ludwigshafen, initially in the composites department and later in the polymer and solid state physics department. During this time, he developed polymer resin systems for composites and structural adhesives, as well as novel [[Polymer Blend|polymer blends]] and polymer foams. His research into the structure--property relationships of these polymer systems led to numerous publications and material patents. During his eight years in industry, he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Kaiserslautern in the field of “[[Non-destructive Testing (NDT)|Non-destructive]] and mechanical testing of composite materials.”

In October 1995, he was appointed professor of polymers and composite materials at the [https://www.tuhh.de/tuhh/en/startpage Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg]. At the same time, he took over as head of the Center of Excellence for Polymer Engineering at TuTech Innovation GmbH in Hamburg and began his work on thermoplastic substrates for electronic circuit boards.

Attracted by the opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration between polymer chemistry and polymer physics, Volker Altstädt moved to the [https://www.uni-bayreuth.de/ Universität Bayreuth] in October 2000. Volker Altstädt was an active member of the German Research Foundation (DFG) (https://www.dfg.de/) panel on the properties and mechanics of [[Polymer|polymers]] for two terms from 2004 to 2012. In 2009, he was elected a member of the Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie für Technikwissenschaften (German Academy of Science and Engineering – acatech) (https://www.acatech.de/). From 2004 to 2010, he was a member of the board of the Wissenschaftlicher Arbeitskreis Kunststofftechnik (WAK) (Scientific Working Group on Plastics Technology) (https://www.wak-kunststofftechnik.de/home/) and since 2008 he has been a member of the Akademie Mitteldeutscher Kunststoffinnovationen (AMK) ([http://www.amk-merseburg.de Academy of Central German Plastics Innovations]). In 2020, he received the SPE Outstanding Achievement Award from the SPE Thermoplastic and Foams Division.

A particular focus of his scientific work at Universität Bayreuth was the development of sustainable and recyclable substrates for electronic circuit boards based on high-temperature [[Thermoplastic Material|thermoplastics]]. In addition, he developed process-optimized process chains for the production of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite plastics with a thermoplastic matrix for use in high-performance lightweight structures.
