Plastics – Symbols and abbreviated terms

The abbreviations for plastics are often based on the basic polymers which are content on it. The upper-case letters used for this purpose are given in:

ISO 1043: Plastics – Symbols and abbreviated terms

  • Part 1 (2011-11): Basic Polymers and their Special Characteristics, modified by ISO 1043 AMD 1:2016-04 Amendment 1: New Symbols ST for Syndiotactic
  • Part 2 (2011-11): Fillers and Reinforcing Materials
  • Part 3 (2016-10): Plasticizers
  • Part 4 (2021-07): Flame Retardants

ISO 1629 (2025-04): Rubber and lattices – Nomenclature

They serve a convenient notation for the chemical designations of plastics according to the IUPAC rules. Additional letters may follow to indicate special properties within a class of plastics.

The material designations for thermoplastic elastomers are given in:

ISO 18064 (2022-04): Thermoplastic elastomers – Nomenclature and abbreviated terms
