General information
The Anglo-Saxon abbreviation SCB stands for ‘Split-Cantilever Beam’.

The SCB-specimen is used to determine the interlaminar crack toughness under mode III loading (see: crack opening modes).
A comprehensive overview of suitable test specimens for fracture mechanics investigations on plastics and composite materials can be found in fracture mechanics test specimens.
Testing adhesive bonds
(Author: Prof. Dr.-Ing. S. Marzi)

When testing adhesive bonds, it is advisable to make the joined parts more solid due to their high fracture toughness [2]. Due to their similarity to DCB-specimens (Mode I), these test specimens are called UODCB (out-of-plane loaded Double Cantilever Beam) or, in their tapered form, TODCB (tapered out-of-plane loaded Double Cantilever Beam). Figure 2 shows these two basic forms of test specimens. The same methods used for DCB and TDCB tests in mode I are available for evaluating the tests.
