General information
A round robin test is a widely used method for external quality comparison of measurement procedures in frequently nationally accredited testing laboratories (see: Accreditation and certification). Basically, test specimens manufactured by a manufacturer or a participating testing laboratory are examined using identical methods and evaluation procedures. The comparison of the results allows statements to be made about the measuring accuracy in general or about the measurement quality of the participating institutes. Ring tests are also used to validate regulations for measurement procedures.

For example, accredited testing laboratories must regularly participate in round robin tests in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard or as part of state approval procedures in order to ensure and prove the quality of their results.
Tasks of the testing institutes for round robin tests
The organiser of a round robin test provides the participating laboratories with the test specimens to be examined and instructions on how to carry out the test. They then collect the measurement data and evaluate it statistically. The participants, whose anonymity is preserved, are informed of the results. Round robin tests are therefore particularly suitable for detecting any systematic measurement deviations or for avoiding poor precision in one's own laboratory. Round robin tests are a suitable element of quality management for the manager of an accredited testing laboratory.
