Prof. Dr. Georg Menges was born on 19 December 1923 in Gernsbach.

He is widely recognised worldwide as a pioneer in plastics technology.

In 1965, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Menges became the new director of the institute and full professor for the newly created chair of plastics processing. His inaugural lecture on 5 November 1965 was linked to the celebrations marking the 15th anniversary of the IKV Aachen and the inauguration of the institute's extension building at Pontstraße 49.

Until his retirement in 1989, his scientific work focused on investigating the structure and properties of plastics and making significant contributions to plastics processing methods such as injection moulding, extrusion, foaming, pressing, blow moulding and deep drawing, as well as their automation. He is also considered one of the pioneers in the development of numerical simulation methods (computer programmes) for calculating flow and heat transport processes in plastics processing methods and the non-linear and anisotropic properties of plastic components.

Under the leadership of Prof. Menges, the ‘Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung’ (IKV) became an internationally renowned teaching and research institute at the RWTH Aachen University. Since its inception, the institute has stood for practice-oriented research, innovation and technology transfer. The particular strength of the IKV lies in its integrative approach to product development, covering the aspects of materials, design and processing in the fields of plastics and rubber. It is supported by a funding association, which today comprises 260 companies from the plastics industry worldwide. The members of the funding association provide essential impetus for the work of the IKV and benefit from its research results at a particularly early stage.

Prof. Menges has been a member of the Plastics Hall of Fame since 19 June 2006. The honour was bestowed in Chicago, USA, during the triennial National Plastics Exposition (NPE). Founded in 1972, the National Plastics Hall of Fame recognises individuals and institutions that have made a significant contribution to progress in the plastics industry. The award is considered the highest of its kind in the plastics industry worldwide.

Prof. Menges is one of a total of eight personalities and one of the first Europeans to receive this high honour in 2006.

One of the most prestigious awards in polymer science and plastics technology is the Georg Menges Prize. It is presented every two years at the International Plastics Technology Colloquium held by the ‘Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung’ (Institute for Plastics Processing) at RWTH Aachen University. The prize is aimed at outstanding individuals or proven groups who have rendered outstanding services in the implementation of research and development findings in the interdisciplinary field between business and science.

It is awarded by the Fachverband Gummi- und Kunststoffmaschinen im Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau (Professional Association of Rubber and Plastics Machinery in the German Engineering Federation), PlasticsEurope Deutschland e. V. and the Vereinigung zur Förderung des Instituts für Kunststoffverarbeitung (IKV) in Industrie und Handwerk an der RWTH Aachen e. V. (Association for the Promotion of the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) in Industry and Trade at RWTH Aachen University).

The award was presented for the first time in 1999 in the Coronation Hall of Aachen City Hall on the occasion of Georg Menges' 75th birthday to Kurt Weirauch. The winner receives a replica of a monocular microscope handmade in Wetzlar in 1899 by the Leitz company.
