Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Grellmann, born on 22 July 1949 in Ammendorf (today: Halle/Saale), is a German physicist and materials scientist with a focus on materials testing, polymer testing, polymer diagnostics and technical fracture mechanics.

Wolfgang Grellmann studied physics at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 1968 to 1974, where he graduated with a degree in solid-state physics on the “Influence of X-rays on the thermal component of yield stress”. In 1978, he completed his research studies with the topic

“Determining the hardness of glasses and ceramics”

with a doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.).

After moving to the Technical University of Leuna-Merseburg (THLM), his scientific work focused on the experimental further development of measurement technology for instrumented impact testing with the aim of improving the information content, in particular the integration of fracture mechanics working methods in the development of plastics and composite materials. He participated in the cross-material approaches of the fracture mechanics school of Prof. Horst Blumenauer at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg].

After a guest stay at the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT), he habilitated in 1986 with a thesis on the topic:

“Assessment of the toughness properties of polymer materials using fracture mechanics parameters”

and thus acquired the venia legendi in materials engineering.

His work as a university lecturer in the field began with his appointment as “University Docent for Materials Engineering” at the Leuna-Merseburg Technical University and continued in 1995 with his appointment as Head of the professorship “Materials Diagnostics/Materials Testing” at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.

Based on his research results on the quantitative structure–property correlations of plastics and composite materials, more than 500 publications in peer-reviewed journals and numerous patents have been published.

Prof. Grellmann has made valuable contributions to the field of hybrid methods of plastics diagnostics from a testing methodology perspective. Together with Prof. Bierögel, he has developed the application of hybrid experimental methods, i.e. the in-situ coupling of mechanical and fracture-mechanical basic tests with non-destructive testing methods to increase the informative value of material parameters and to formulate damage limit values, e.g. The qualification of the basic mechanical experiments is further developed through instrumentation and the use of improved measurement and evaluation techniques such as acoustic emission analysis, video extensometry, laser extensometry or field measurement techniques in conjunction with an event- and structure-related interpretation of the deformation phases of the plastics.

He recognized the importance of knowledge transfer from basic research to industrial practice at an early stage and, together with colleagues, initiated the founding of the Institute for Polymer Materials e. V. (IPW, 1992) and Polymer Service GmbH Merseburg (PSM, 2001) as affiliated institutes at Martin Luther University, which he later transferred to Merseburg University of Applied Sciences. Cooperation with the plastics manufacturing and processing industry was given significant support by the founding of the Plastics Competence Center Halle-Merseburg (Kunststoff-Kompotenzzentrum Halle-Merseburg (KKZ), 2007), which he headed as Scientific-Technical Director from 2007 to 2014.

Also in 2007, together with 10 professors, he founded the Stiftung Akademie Mitteldeutsche Kunststoffinnovationen (Curiculum Vitae), which he headed as Vice President until 2011 and subsequently as President until 2018 and has been Honorary President since 2019.

In the German Association for Materials Research and Testing (Deutscher Verband für Materialforschung und -prüfung e.V, DVM), Prof. Grellmann has worked to establish the polymer materials group, for example in the traditional “Materials Testing” conference and in the “Polymer Testing & Component Diagnostics” working group, both of which he also chaired. In 2020, the DVM awarded him the

DVM Gold Badge of Honor

in recognition and appreciation of his services as Chairman of the "Materials Testing Conference" and the DVM working group "Polymer Testing and Component Diagnostics".

The testing methods for plastics and composites commonly used in the industry today are comprehensively described in the student textbooks ”Kunststoffprüfung“ and ”Polymer Testing“, which enabled plastics testing to establish itself as an independent scientific discipline within polymer science (see DVM-Nachrichten No. 49 (2009)). In 2010, a Russian translation was also published, taking into account the special GOST standards. The published textbooks and reference books were produced in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Sabine Seidler, Chair of “Non-metallic Materials” at the Vienna Technical University.
