__FORCETOC__

Fundamentals
The brittle-to-ductile transition temperature is a physical characteristic value that describes a fundamental change in material behaviour. For technical reasons, the focus is often on material toughness, e.g. impact or notched impact strength, or fracture mechanics parameters such as critical J-values or crack opening displacement.

Determination of the brittle-tough transition temperature using the example of impact-resistant polyamide
The brittle-to-ductile transition temperature indicates the temperature at which a change in the fracture behaviour of a material occurs, i.e. the toughness of the material increases from a low to a high level. This is associated with a sharp increase in the toughness characteristics. In addition, a change in the deformation and fracture behaviour can often occur in the form of, for example, white fracture (see: fracture types) or pronounced plastic deformation.

The example (see Figure) shows the crack toughness J of impact-modified polyamide 6 (abbreviation: PA6) as a function of the test temperature. The proportion of impact modifier was varied between 5 and 30 wt.-%. It can be seen that these materials exhibit a brittle-tough transition, the position of which depends on the modifier content.
