Horst Blumenauer (7 February 1935–15 May 2018) was a renowned German materials scientist and materials mechanic who taught as a professor of ‘Metallurgy and Metal Testing’ at Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg from 1968 to 2000. As a student and successor of Ernst Schiebold, he purposefully continued the scientific school of materials testing based on materials physics founded by Schiebold and, by establishing close links with solid-state physics on the one hand and solid-state mechanics, design engineering and technology on the other, further expanded and consolidated both the theoretical foundation and the practical effectiveness of this scientific discipline.

In his numerous textbooks and specialist books, he was the first to present the methods of materials testing, materials diagnostics and technical fracture mechanics across all materials, systematically organising new research findings and adapting them for the education of students. Against the backdrop of the dynamically developing field of materials science, he always focused on the generalisation of results for all material groups.

The monograph ‘Technische Bruchmechanik’ (Technical Fracture Mechanics), which he wrote together with Gerhard Pusch in the early 1980s, not only contains fracture mechanical characteristics for various types of steel, cast iron materials and light metal alloys, but also sections on polymer materials, composite materials, ceramic materials and building materials.

His particular achievement was to recognise early on the importance of fracture mechanics, which emerged in the USA in the 1950s, and to harness its potential for materials testing.

Horst Blumenauer's scientific achievements span a broad field of work on the microstructure–property correlation and damage analysis of metallic materials using the relevant materials diagnostic methods, in particular quantitative fractography and X-ray stress measurement, which was also successfully tested by Heinz Hoffmann on polymer materials.

His long-standing interest in promoting polymer material testing in Merseburg, based on his activities as head of the main research area ‘Grundlagen der Werkstoffprüfung (Fundamentals of Materials Testing; 1974–1990), member of the Academy of Sciences (1977–1992) and member of the editorial board of the Deutschen Verlag für Grundstoffindustrie (German Publishing House for Basic Industries), led, for example, to the realisation of the book projects ‘Kunststoffprüfung’ and ‘Polymer Testing’ (Eds. Grellmann, W. / Seidler, S.) published by Carl Hanser Publishing House.
